Zone Creations carried out considerable work on the latest blockbuster movie SUNSHINE. This included design development, manufacture and installation of the complete Earth room unit within the film set.
Working closely with Gary Freeman and Stephen Morahan, both art directors, we produced the finished unit within a 6 week timescale.
The complete Earth room had to be manufactured from a 19mm composite air board acrylic sheeting. This is an opal acrylic with a honeycomb core. All internal framing had to be manufactured from 20mm clear acrylic and seamlessly bonded to leave invisible joints. The entire cube was illuminated in a cavity space between walls, floor and ceiling.
The Earth room size was 3m x 3m x 2m tall and had to have structural floor and also a working door. The entire cube was installed on site and constructed from pre-fabricated sections. The room was located within a large grid work of steel framing and had to be structurally sound to take movement and filming within. One side of the Earth room used a 12mm clear air board material to replicate a window and allow distorted filing through the honeycomb structure.
Monitor Bezels and detailed panels were art of the Sunshine project. These were Laser cut from acrylic and CNC routed from Foamex. The components were then assembled on site to create the realistic space station interior.
